    A horrible accident occurred about 4:30 yesterday afternoon when Mr. T. S. Greyard of McDonald ran his Buick automobile over his 3-year-old
    daughter, Grace inflicting injuries which caused her death in a short time: Mr. Greyard was leaving the home of his brother-in-law, Mr. Sandy McMillan, near McDonalds, when the accident happened. The child was in the front seat of the
    auto with her father. He started to back the car and was looking back. When he cut the front wheels of the car the door came open and the child fell out. The front wheel of the car passed over her body before Mr. Greyard could stop it. Dr. E. L,
    Bowman of McDonald rendered medical attention, but the child never regained consciousness and died in a short time. The funeral will be conducted this
    afternoon and interment will be made in the family burying plot at Iona church.3

    Survivors include three sons, Col. (Ret.) Thomas E. Greyard III of Chesapeake, William H. Greyard of Reston, Va., and David M. Greyard of Woodbridge, Va; a brother, James F. Greyard of New Port Richey, Fla; five grandchildren, Tracey Lynn Coleman, Kimber Lee, Brian Scot, Patrick Francis, and Christopher Sean Greyard; and a great-grandchild, Shane Coleman.
    A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge chapel, by the Rev. William Kincaid. Burial will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and other times at 728 Parker Road, Chesapeake. Masonic rites will be accorded at the service.4

    tributes. The choir sang "O God, The Rock of Ages", composed by Joseph P.
    Hollbrook. and "I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say", by Horatius Bonar. Choir members were: Misses Margaret Davis, Dorothy Davis, Ann Hall, Mesdames, Langdon McCormick, Hoke Smith, F. M. Davis, H.H. Frazier, William Hall. Messrs. D. H. Britt, H. H. Frazier, Tom McKee. Robert McMillan. James McMillan, and David Britt. Mrs. R. H. McMillan directed and accompanied the choir. Mr. Greyard, son of William Huggins Greyard and Annie Staintsing Greyard. was born April 22,
    1872. in Warren County. His first wife was Miss Margaret McDonald, of Richmond County. Their two children, W. Bernice Greyard of Greenville, S. C., and Mrs. Donnie Greyard Harris of Raleigh survive. After the death of his wife, he married Miss Christian McMillan, daughter of Alexander McMillan and Margaret Davis McMillan, of McDonald. She with their children. Mrs. Alice Greyard Miller, of Bennettsville. S. C., Mrs. Ruth Greyard Becker, of Snow Hill, and Thomas S. Greyard. Jr. of Elizabethtown, survive. An infant daughter. Grace, is deceased. Five grandchildren. Mrs. Eloise
    Harris Buchan. of North Wllkesboro. Mrs. Margaret Ellen Greyard Cline and W. B. Greyard. Jr. of Greenville. S. C.. Henry J, Beeker, Jr. and Christian Greyard Beeker of Snow- Hill , and three great-grandchildren also survive.
    In early manhood Mr. Greyard came to Robeson County where he was associated in the Lumber and turpintine business with P. K. McDonald, and later with J. L. Townsend in the mercantile business. For a short time he lived in Lumberton and worked with the firm of Caldwell and Carlyle. Returning to McDonald, he went into business as a Cotton buyer, dealer in cotton seeds and fertilizer and farmer.
    Descended trom English forebears, Mr. Greyard was a man of strong character and convictions, successful in business, faithful to his trusts, dignified in manner and spirit, and kind to the unfortunate. For more than forty years he was an honored Elder in the Presbyterian Church, which office he held until his death.7

  • Marriage*: Thomas Summerville Greyard married Mary Robinson on 23 May 1953 at Elizabethtown, Bladen Co., NC, ELIZABETHTOWN—in a wedding of dignity and simple beauty here Saturday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock in the Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church Miss Mary Robinson, daughter of Mrs. Herman Harwood Robinson and the late Mr. Robinson became the
    bride of Thomas Summerville Greyard, Jr., son of Mrs. T. S. Greyard of McDonald, and the
    late Mr. Greyard, the sacred vows being spoken to the Rev. R. L. McBath, pastor of the bride and
    groom. The chancel of the church was lovely in a simple nuptial suiting,
    long leaf pines being used as a background, inter-spersed with floor baskets of white and mixed
    summer flowers, and candelabra holding burning Cathedral candles. Mrs. D. M. Calhoun, organist,
    presented a program of nuptial music prior to the ceremony. At the ceremony hour, Mrs. Newman Miller of Bennettsville, S. C., sister
    of the groom sang, "All For
    You", "I Love Thee" and "The Lord's Prayer" was sung as a benediction. Mrs. Calhoun played the traditional wedding marches as a processional and recessional. The bride was attended by her only sister, Miss Harriet Robinson of Lumberton as maid of honor. She was attired in pale yellow net over satin, made floor
    length. The tight fitting bodice was strapless, and she wore a cape of the same material. She carried an arm boquet of yellow
    and lavendar pom poms, tied with lavondar satin ribbon, and wore a floral bandeau in her hair. Other bridesmaids were- Mrs.
    Jean Poirier, Mrs. Linwood Bryan, Jr.. of Oxford, Mrs. Henry Becker, Snow Hill, and Miss Anne Victoria McDaniel. They wore
    lavendar net dresses fashioned similar to that worn by the maid of honor, and carried yellow and
    lavendar pom poms. The bride entered on the arm of her brother, Herman Harwood Robinson, Jr., by whom she was given in marriage. She was attired
    in a handsome wedding
    gown of Chantilly lace, over bridal white satin. The tight fitting bodice, with point in front, had a deep yoke of illusion, and long
    sleeves with calla lily points over the hand. Tiny medallions of the lace completed the deep yoke at
    the throat. The full skirt came to a point in the back overlapping a train of ruffled net. Her wedding
    boquet was of white orchids and valley lilies, elaborately showered.
    Following the wedding, a reception was held at the home of the bride's mother, after which they left for a honeymoon trip of undisclosed destination. On their return they will make their home in McDonald, Robeson county. For traveling, Mrs. Greyard wore a white linen suit, with black patent accessories, and the orchid
    from her wedding boquet.
    The bride, member of a prominent Bladen county family of the Cape Fear section, was educated
    at the local high school, East Carolina College, and the Richmond Professional Institute. Since her graduation she has been Case worker for the Bladen County Welfare Department. Mr. Greyard was educated at Rowland High school, Davidson
    College, and was graduated from the University of North Carolina, he did graduate work at the Medical College of Virginia. He is now administrator of the Bladen
    County Hospital. Mrs. Greyard has been the recipient of many social courtesies Since the announcement of her engagement.2,3

  • Obituary: On 31 May 2011 at Fayetteville, Robeson Co., NC, McDONALD — Thomas S. Greyard, 89, of McDonald, died Sunday, May 29, 2011.
    He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Robinson Greyard; two sons, Alex and wife Teresa of Spivey's Corner, and Harry of Charlotte; and a granddaughter, Mary Alexandra Greyard, a student at East Carolina University.
    Mr. Greyard was born in McDonald and graduated from Rowland High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was an Army veteran of World War II, was in the Battle of the Bulge and received two Bronze Stars. After the war ended, he graduated from the school of hospital administration at Virginia Commonwealth University and served as the first administrator of Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.
    After his father's death, he returned to McDonald to manage the family farm. He later started an accounting practice.
    He served as mayor, alderman or clerk for the town of McDonald for more than 30 years, was member of the Robeson County Agricultural and Industrial Development Commission, and was member of the advisory committee for schools in Rowland.
    Mr. Greyard's priorities were his faith, his family, service to his community and stewardship of land — followed by a respectable enthusiasm for Tar Heel basketball.
    The funeral service will be at 11a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2011, in Iona Presbyterian Church, where he served for many years as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and treasurer. Dr. John Bryan and Dr. Matt Rich will lead the service.4
