  • Obituary: On 5 March 1919 at Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC, MRS. J. A. JONES VICTIM OF FLU
    -----
Death Occurred at 3:30 O'Clock Yesterday at Her Home.
    -----
Funeral Services Will Be Held at Home Today, Rev. J. W. Moore Officiating.
    -----
Ill only since Friday, Mrs. Emma Lochart Renn Jones, wife of J. A. Jones, died at 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at her home, 1011 South Tryon street, of pneumonia, following an attack of Spanish influenza, and contracted the disease. Mr. Jones and three of the children are now ill with this malady.

Funeral services will be conducted from the home this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock by Rev. J. W. Moore, pastor of Trinity Methodist church, of which Mrs. Jones was an active and devout member. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery.

The daughter of the late Rev. J. J. Renn, D. D., a Methodist minister, and Mrs. Roberta Reavis Renn, Mrs. Jones was born August 29, 1885, at Henderson, in Vance county. The family later moved to Greesnboro, and at the age of 13 years Mrs. Jones had completed her public school studies and entered Greensboro Woman's college, then Greensboro Female college. She was graduated from this institution as the leader of her class. Later she became a leader of the alumnae of this college and, through the exercise of her influence, was laregley instrumental in creating sentiment which resulted in the change of name.

After graduation, Mrs. Jones was a member of the faculty of the Greensboro public schools for 10 years, and held a prominent place in the social life of that city. As a member of Centenary Methodist church, of Greensboro, Mrs. Jones gave much of her time and efforts to religious work, being a recognized leader in the work of both the Sunday school and congregation. She was a musician of marked talent and was church organist.

At the age of 30 years she became the bride of Mr. Jones, the wedding being solemnized September 8, 1915, at Centenary Methodist church, her pastor, Rev. R. D. Sherrill, officiating, and was a social event attracting notable statewide interest. To this union two children were born, Emma Renn Jones, age two and one-half years, and Robert Joseph Jones, age eight months. Other members of her immediate family surviving her are 11 step-children, Helen Estelle Jones, Paul Stewart Jones, Dorothy May Jones, William Franklin Jones, Minnie Beatrice Jones, Johnny Hooper Jones, James A. Jones, Jr., H. Berryman Jones, Frances Elizabeth Jones, Lieut. Raymond A. Jones, of engineers, lately returned from France, and Edwin L. Jones; two brothers, Thomas Reavis Renn, of the naval aviation service, at New York, and Joseph J. Renn, a noncommissioned officer of the Thritieth division, now in France; one sister, Miss Kate Renn, of Greensboro, who arrived here early last night; three half-brothers, E. V. Renn, of Porthmouth, Va; W. E. Renn, of Norfolk, Va., and John W. Renn, of Birmingham, Ala. and two half-sisters, Miss Maggie Renn, of Greensboro, and Mrs. Mack Coburn, of Hendersonville. Mrs. Renn, whose home is in Greensboro, arrived here Saturday in response to a telegram informing her of her daughter's serious illness. Doctor Renn died in 1906.

Mrs. Jones was unconscious almost all the time from early Saturday until the moment of her death. Yesterday morning she inquired how her physician regarded her conditin and was informed by Mrs. Renn that "they are very hopeful." A few minutes after 3 o'clock Mrs. Jones asked for more covering, explaining that she was cold and when her mother had provided this she whispered words that were understood to be "We are to part," her last words, as she lapsed into unconsicousness.

Mr. Jones, little Emma and Robert and Miss Helen Estelle are ill with influenza, but the condition of each is regarded as favorable.

Mrs. Jones was a first cousin of Lieutenant Colonel Renn, commanding officer of the army base hospital at Camp Greene.
