- Death*: He died on 15 June 1916 at Bath, Beaufort Co., NC, at age 61 . Joe died when the potato boat he was riding on, going to Washington to do some shopping, capsized after taking on an excessive load of potatoes in Bath. There were 12 people, three girls died with Joe on the boat- they were going to get their wedding paraphenalia and they thought that Joe went back into the cabin to try to get the girls out and he didn't make it before the boat capsized. At the time, potatoes were carried into Washington by boat to catch the rail head to sell and the potato boat was loaded. They've got a big boat, and when they got to the mouth of the creek, there were farmers on the side and they waved them in and said "Our potatoes are going to rot if you don't take them" , so they loaded them and they overloaded it, really, and they went out the creek and made the turn to go to Washington and they keeled over and that was how Joe Woolard died. (This interesting information was narrated to Floyd Faulkner by Jack Lloyd Wallace, grandson, during an interview 11-1-97).5,6
