The land was given in consideration of the real desire he has to promote the worship of the only true God and the encouragement of schools of useful knowledge.1
- (Witness) Deed: He witnessed the deed of Thomas Adams Word on 27 December 1794 at Surry Co., NC; He deeded to Lewis Forkner, Edmund Hodges, and Obediah Baker, Elders of Baptist Church in Hollow Settlement, for the "desire said Word has to promote worship of the only true God and encouragement of Schools of Knowledge," 10 acres on Lovins Creek, middle fork of Tarrarat River, Donaldsons School House Branch; part of state grant to Charles Word (specifies Elders give free priviledge for worship of God of other established churches except when in use by Baptists, to keep up Schools and by no means erect Dwelling houses, houses of public drinking places or any other practice of immorality). Wit: richard Laurance, Matthew Davis, John McKinney, Sr.(There are loose estates papers at the NC Archives.)2
